Dartmoor Letterboxes

This evocative orchestral suite has 7 movements, each depicting a Dartmoor Tor.

Judy was commissioned to write Dartmoor Letterboxes by viola player Rob Kellagher, in memory of his veterinary colleague Bill Sharpe who loved 'letterboxing' on the moor. Rob requested that a children's string orchestra be incorporated into the piece, so Judy created the jaunty 'Walking Theme'  to be played by them between each movement.

  • Brat Tor - a striking and distinctive tor, which is followed by the recurring Walking Theme

  • Drizzlecombe - a Bronze Age burial ground

  • Brent Tor - the site of an iconic church built on a ley-line

  • Crockern Tor - the old spirit of Dartmoor astride his skeleton horse

  • Tavy Cleave - the river tumbles wildly over granite boulders

  • Cuckoo Rock - a popular outcrop on Coombshead Tor

  • Fur Tor - the 'Queen of Tors'
